“Bending strength” in the Performance Parameters of Tungsten Carbide Blades

Across a wide range of industries, the transverse rupture strength of slitting blades is a key performance indicator. But what exactly is transverse rupture strength? What material characteristics does it represent? And how is it determined in tungsten carbide blades?

I. What is Transverse Rupture Strength" and in the Performance Parameters of Tungsten Carbide Blades?

1.Transverse rupture strength

Transverse rupture strength, also known as Bending strength,or transverse breaking strength, refers to the maximum ability of a material to resist fracture and failure when subjected to a bending force perpendicular to its axis.

We can take it into mind as follows:

How we test:
A cemented carbide blade sample is supported at two points, similar to a bridge, and a downward load is applied at the center until fracture occurs. The maximum load at fracture is recorded and converted into a transverse rupture strength value using a standard formula.

Physical meaning:
TRS represents the material’s toughness and load-bearing limit under complex stress conditions, where tensile stress acts on the surface and compressive stress acts in the core.

II. What Product Characteristics Does It Represent?

Primarily, The Transverse rupture strength reflects the toughness and reliability of tungsten carbide blades, and specifically in the following ways:

1. Resistance to fracture and edge chipping:

During cutting operations, slitting blades—especially the cutting edge—are subjected to impact loads, vibration, and cyclic stresses (such as intermittent cutting or machining workpieces with scale or cast surfaces). A higher transverse rupture strength means the blade is less prone to sudden breakage, corner chipping, or edge failure.

2. Overall reliability and operational safety:

To find whether a blade can operate stably under harsh conditions without catastrophic failure, TRS should be a key element. For tools used in rough machining, intermittent cutting, or high-impact applications, such as milling cutters and planing tools, transverse rupture strength is particularly important.

3. Balance with hardness and wear resistance:

When we talk about cemented carbide blades, hardness/wear resistance and transverse rupture strength/toughness, they are typically mutually constraining properties.

Pursuing extremely high hardness (high WC content and fine grain size) often sacrifices some transverse rupture strength.

Conversely, increasing cobalt or other metallic binder content to improve TRS generally leads to a slight reduction in hardness.

That is:

High hardness / high wear resistance → better wear life, suitable for finishing operations.

High transverse rupture strength / high toughness → more robust and damage-resistant, suitable for rough machining and severe working conditions.

III. How Is It Determined in Tungsten Carbide Blades?

Transverse rupture strength is not determined by a single factor, but by the combined effects of composition, microstructure, and manufacturing process of cemented carbide blades:

a. Binder Phase (Cobalt, Co) Content and Distribution

1. The Content of the Binder Phase:

This is the most influential factor. Higher cobalt content improves toughness and generally increases transverse rupture strength.

The cobalt phase acts as a metallic binder that effectively encapsulates tungsten carbide grains and absorbs and disperses energy during crack propagation.

2. The Distribution:

Uniform distribution of the cobalt phase is critical. Cobalt segregation or the formation of “cobalt pools” creates weak points that reduce overall strength.

b. Tungsten Carbide (WC) Grain Size

In general, with the same cobalt content, finer WC grain size results in simultaneous improvements in strength and hardness. Fine-grained cemented carbide blades (submicron or nano-scale) can maintain high hardness while achieving good transverse rupture strength.

Coarse-grained cemented carbide blades usually exhibit better toughness, thermal shock resistance, and fatigue resistance, but lower hardness and wear resistance.

c. Alloy Composition and Additives

In addition to the basic WC–Co system, To add hard phases such as tantalum carbide (TaC), niobium carbide (NbC), or titanium carbide (TiC) can improve high-temperature performance and red hardness, but typically reduces transverse rupture strength.

The addition of small amounts of elements such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) can refine grain size and strengthen the cobalt phase, thereby it can improve transverse rupture strength to some extent.

d. Manufacturing Process

Tungsten Carbide and Cobalt Powder

Mixing and ball milling:

The uniformity of raw powder mixing directly determines the homogeneity of the final microstructure.

Sintering process:

Control of sintering temperature, time, and atmosphere has a decisive influence on grain growth, cobalt distribution, and final porosity. Only fully dense, defect-free sintered bodies can achieve maximum transverse rupture strength. Any pores, cracks, or inclusions act as stress concentration sites and significantly reduce actual strength.
